Treating Syphilis
Syphilis Fact Sheet (PDF 73 KB)
Syphilis is
easily treated in its early stages (infection less than one
year) with a single dose of penicillin. If someone has had
syphilis for longer than one year, additional doses may be
needed. Other antibiotics can be used for people with
penicillin allergies.
In all stages of syphilis, proper treatment will cure the
disease, but in late syphilis, damage already done to body
organs cannot be reversed.
It is very important that all sex partners be evaluated,
tested, and treated. Persons with syphilis should finish all
medication and allow all sores to heal completely before
having sex again. People who have had syphilis and have been
treated can get the disease again if they have sexual contact
with persons infected with syphilis.
Treatment for any communicable disease should always be done
in consultation with your health care provider. |
