Pertussis: A National Epidemic?

Pertussis incidence is up throughout the nation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has received 11,131 case reports nationwide this year, compared to 6,761 cases at the same time last year (through October 16th).

Similar increases have been noted throughout Colorado with 627 case reports statewide and 108 in Boulder County (through October 20, 2004). This represents a 58% increase in Boulder County alone when compared to the county’s 5-year median for pertussis (see figure below).
