Colorado Influenza Data

2005-2006 Season

An estimated 10%-20% of U.S. residents get influenza each year. An average of 114,000 people are hospitalized for flu-related complications and 36,000 Americans die each year from complications of flu.

Colorado Hospitalizations Associated with Laboratory-Confirmed Influenza During the 2005-2006 Season

  • 852 people were hospitalized

  • 390 of them were people over 60 years of age

  • 129 were children younger than 12 months

  • 116 were children between 12 months and 4 years

  • 137 were between 5 and 19 years

  • 58 were between 20 and 39 years

  • 84 were between 40 and 59 years

  • In Boulder County, 23 people were hospitalized, including 7 children under 4 years of age

Flu-Related Deaths in Children in the 2005- 2006 Season

During the 2005-2006 flu season, 41 pediatric deaths were reported from 14 states. In Colorado, 2 children died.

2004-2005 Season

Colorado Hospitalizations Associated with Laboratory-Confirmed Influenza During the 2004-2005 Season

  • 964 people were hospitalized

  • 496 of them were people over 60 years of age

  • 63 were children younger than 6 months

  • 68 were between 6 and 23 months

  • 56 were between 2 and 4 years

  • 51 were between 5 and 17 years

  • 87 were between 18 and 39 years

  • 51 were between 40 and 49 years

  • 92 were between 50 and 59 years

Flu-Related Deaths in Children in the 2004- 2005 Season

During the 2004-2005 season, the CDC received reports from 16 states, including Colorado, of 36 pediatric deaths due to laboratory-confirmed influenza. In Colorado, 2 children died – a 15-year-old girl who had severe underlying medical conditions, and an 8-year-old girl with a history of non-severe asthma.

2003-2004 Season

During the 2003-2004 season, over 14,000 Colorado residents were sick from influenza, and 6,000 of them were children 4 years of age or less. Twelve Colorado children died.
