Parents Urged to
Make Certain Their Children Are Up to Date on Immunizations Prior to
Attending School
Aug.18, 2008 - DENVER - Colorado Department of Public
Health and Environment officials Wednesday reminded parents
and guardians to make certain their children have had all
the immunizations required for their age group before they
are enrolled in preschool or school. In January 2007, the
department’s Board of Health approved three additional
vaccine requirements for children in child care and school
settings. The three vaccines are for pneumococcal disease, a
second dose for chickenpox, and for tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis
(Tdap) - which is different from the already required DTaP
(diphtheria/tetanus/pertussis).

More Evidence that Vaccines are Safe
Summer 2006 — A recent study published in the journal Pediatrics,
provides further evidence that vaccines are safe. A survey of over 27,000
Canadian children born between 1987 and 1998 showed that there is no
relationship between the preservative thimerosal or the
measles/mumps/rubella (MMR) vaccine and developmental disorders, such as

Hepatitis A
Vaccination Recommended
May 1, 2006, DENVER — Dr. Ned Calonge, Colorado’s chief medical
officer who is based at the Colorado Department of Public Health and
Environment, Monday said that getting two doses of Hepatitis A
vaccination is a good idea for individuals with chronic liver diseases,
such as hepatitis B or hepatitis C, because the vaccine can prevent
additional liver damage. More
One Case of
Mumps Confirmed in Colorado
April 2006, Colorado — The state of Iowa
has been experiencing a large outbreak of mumps that began in
December 2005. The majority of cases are occurring among persons
18-25 years of age, many of whom are vaccinated. Additional cases of
mumps, possibly linked to the Iowa
outbreak, are also under investigation in eight neighboring
states. Thus far, Colorado has one confirmed case
related to this outbreak, although several suspect cases are
under investigation.

Winter
2005-2006 — Boulder County Public Health (BCPH) will be
participating in the new Colorado Immunization Information
System (CIIS). The CIIS is a new tool that will assist in
tracking, updating, and sharing records confidentially among
care providers. We expect CIIS to help us greatly improve our immunization
services for Boulder County. More
