Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis) Vaccine   (Español)

Tdap Vaccine Fact Sheet (PDF 39 KB) Español (PDF 237 KB)

Tdap is a vaccine for adolescents and adults that protects against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis. This is the first vaccine available to protect older children and adults against pertussis (whooping cough). There are two brands of vaccine that can be used. Boostrix, manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, is licensed for people 10 through 18 years of age. Adacel, manufactured by Sanofi Pasteur, is licensed for people 11 through 64 years of age.

The routine schedule for Tdap immunization should be used for the following people:

  • Adolescents who have recieved the DTaP or DTP vaccination as children but have not received a dose of Td (tetanus/diphtheria) should get the Tdap vaccination . The preferred age is 11-12 years, but it can be given to 10 year-old children if the proper vaccine is available.
  • Adolescents who have already gotten a booster dose of Td should get a dose of Tdap in 5 years for protection against pertussis.
  • Adults 65 years of age and younger who have not received a routine booster shot of Td within the last 10 years should receive Tdap instead of Td.

Shorter intervals between Td and Tdap are recommended for adolescents and adults when the risk from the disease outweighs the risk from side effects (usually a sore or swollen arm) of giving the vaccines closer together. Tdap can be given at an interval of 2 years or less:

  • When there is a possibility the person will be exposed to pertussis disease.
  • When the person will be in close contact with infants 12 months or younger, or a child who has not been vaccinated against pertussis – ideally the vaccine should be given at least 1 month before the contact will occur.
  • To women who are considering becoming pregnant.
  • To women immediately after giving birth.
