1st Positive Mosquito for West Nile
June 23rd - The Larimer County Department of Health and Environment reported on
Tuesday, June 22, that a mosquito has tested positive for West Nile
virus. The mosquito (a Culex tarsalis)
was trapped on June 8 and tested by the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC). The location of the mosquito trap was in Fort Collins.
There have been no positive mosquitoes detected in Boulder County to
date, as well as no positive bird, horse, or animal cases. The positive
test in Larimer County is the first positive mosquito pool in Colorado.
According to Dr. Adrienne LeBailly, M.D., Larimer County Health
Department Director, "We now have confirmation that the West Nile
virus is present in the county, which is really not a surprise."
The positive mosquito is a reminder that individuals need to protect
themselves by remembering the 4 Ds:
Use DEET or
alternative.
DRESS in long
sleeves and pants.
Avoid DUSK until DAWN.
DRAIN standing
water.
