West Nile Virus at Extremely Low Levels
So Far in 2004
Excerpt from Colorado Mosquito Control June Report
July 7th - West Nile Virus, although present in Colorado, is at extremely low levels so
far in 2004, most likely due to below-average temperatures. So far this year, Boulder
County has reported 2 human cases, 1 positive mosquito pool, and no positive horses or birds.
The below-average temperatures on the Northern Front Range have kept mosquito
populations overall quite low. Only localized “hot-spots,” made up primarily
of floodwater mosquitoes, have been seen so far.
Culex tarsalis mosquitoes have remained below average, and well below last year's record levels in
nearly all areas. Recent heavy rains across the county will likely cause a
spike in all mosquito species as we enter the first week of July, and any
significant warming may trigger increased Culex populations.
