Mosquito-Proofing Your Home
Due to the recent rainfall, now is an ideal time to check your home
for standing water. Mosquitoes will probably be found in water that
is not moving and remains stagnant for greater than four days. One
small container of water may hold as much as 10,000 mosquito larvae!
The question is how do I find breeding sites
around my home and what can I do to eliminate those sites? Use the
tips below as a guideline on where to look and steps
you can take to prevent mosquitoes from breeding around your home.
- Rain gutters and eaves (leaves can accumulate and create
enough water for mosquitoes to breed)
- Buckets
- Small children’s pools
- Children’s toys
- Sandboxes
- Dog toys
- Barrels
- Wheelbarrows
- Birdbaths
- Pool covers
- Flower pots (pot and saucer)
- Accumulated leaves
- Tires
- Cans (coffee cans, etc.)
- Bottles
- Tarps
- Trash cans and recycling bins
- Lawn decorations that hold water
- Table umbrellas
Routinely drain water from these sources, or if
possible, eliminate the source completely. In addition, be sure to
trim or prune shrubs and bushes, mow your lawn frequently, and avoid
over-watering your lawn.
As always, in addition to DRAINING
standing water, continue to follow the other 3 Ds:
-
Use DEET-enhanced insect repellent or
alternative
-
DRESS in long sleeves and pants
-
Avoid the outdoors between DUSK AND DAWN
