West Nile Virus Threat Still Exists
Boulder County Public Health officials would like to remind
residents that West Nile virus is still a very real threat, and this
is no time to become complacent. Our recent rain, followed by dryer,
hotter temperatures, creates a mosquito-friendly environment. Boulder
County is seeing a rise in its mosquito population, especially the
Culex mosquito, which is known to
carry and transmit the virus.
Of the six confirmed cases of West Nile virus in Boulder County,
the most recent, a girl under the age of 18, was confirmed just last
week. Also, a second mosquito pool has tested positive for the virus.
Residents are reminded to protect themselves against West Nile virus
throughout the entire season, which won't end until mid-to-late
September. County officials reiterate that the threat of contracting
the disease is still present, and this is no time to let down your
guard.
To protect themselves, people should use mosquito repellent that's
been proven to be effective, such as DEET-enhanced repellent. Although
there are many alternatives to DEET-enhanced insect repellent, only
one has been validated for effectiveness. According to a
report in the New England Journal
of Medicine (PDF), Bite Blocker is a soy-based insect repellent
that offers protection for approximately 90 minutes.
Other natural alternatives
only work for 10 - 15 minutes, and unless people continually reapply
protection, these alternatives are ineffective. DEET products are the
most effective and have been deemed safe for use by the American
Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC), both of which recommend DEET concentrations up to 30
percent for children and adults.
Remembering and practicing the "4 Ds" will help everyone protect
themselves until the threat of West Nile virus is over this year:
-
Use DEET-enhanced insect repellent or
alternative.
-
DRESS in long sleeves and pants.
- Avoid the outdoors between DUSK AND DAWN.
- DRAIN standing water.
