When to Seek Medical Attention
With the change in seasons on its way and the rapid fluctuations in
weather, many people are suffering from colds and flu-like symptoms
these days. Because of this, many have asked, “Could these be symptoms
of West Nile virus? Should I get tested?”
The symptoms for the virus include fever, headache, fatigue, and body
aches, occasionally with a skin rash (on the trunk of the body) and
swollen lymph glands. Eighty-eight percent of the West Nile virus
patients reported to Boulder County Public Health illness last year
suffered from these sorts of symptoms. The remaining twelve percent
developed meningitis or encephalitis.
If people develop an illness and have concerns about West Nile virus,
they should consult with their family doctors. This is the same
recommendation for evaluating any illness. Family doctors are likely
to have knowledge of their patients’ medical histories and can make
the most appropriate decisions for evaluating each person on a
patient-by-patient basis.
