Colorado Mosquito Control
August 2004 Report
Excerpt from CMC August Report
West Nile virus continued its relatively slow propagation in Colorado through
the month of
August. Most cases were primarily concentrated on the West Slope. To
date,
186 human cases have been reported, with two deaths (both Mesa
County).
Boulder County has reported 13 human cases to date in 2004. As
expected,
the northern Front Range has had a number of cases but is
significantly below
last years record epidemic levels.
Mesa County and, specifically, the Grand Valley in and around the
City of Grand
Junction continues to be the hardest hit with 105 of the 186 cases
(56%). A large scale emergency aerial ULV adulticide application
supervised by Colorado Mosquito Control to 63,000 acres, took place on
July 31st and an expanded area (73,000 ac.) was repeated on August
4th, 5th and 6th. Another application is now planned for August 31 and
September 1st.
Arizona and California remain the other 2 hardest hit states in
2004 with 307 and 234 human cases respectively, reported to date. New
Mexico has jumped up to 35 cases and Utah now reports its first 4
cases.
