Detecting and Tracking West Nile Virus
Detection is an important part of West
Nile virus planning. It includes surveillance of birds, horses,
mosquitoes, as well as human activity.
Surveillance is maintained
through partnerships among Boulder County government, health care
providers, veterinarians, and contracted mosquito control providers.
Although
43 different species of mosquitoes can carry the West Nile virus,
Culex species are the primary carriers of the virus in Colorado. BCPH
focuses on these species for surveillance, control, and as an
indicator of risk for human exposure to West Nile Virus.
