Boulder County Plan

Boulder County’s plan to protect residents from the effects of West Nile Virus (WNV) is two-fold.

First, it involves an extensive education campaign to encourage you to:

  1. Protect yourself by wearing protective clothing and using insect repellent.
  2. Protect your property by eliminating standing water.

Second, is the implementation of significant surveillance factors that act as indicators for WNV activity:

  1. Increase in numbers of WNV carrying species of mosquito (Culex tarsalis spp) in traps around the county.
  2. Increase in numbers of infected mosquitoes found in traps.
  3. Increase in numbers of "positive" dead birds.
  4. Identification of horse or human cases.

Only after each of these factors have been evaluated is adulticiding considered. It is important to remember that chemical application for control of adult mosquitoes makes up only 6% of the program.

More than 94% of the program is biological and physical control of mosquito larvae prior to adult emergence. This is part of our Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program for Mosquito Control.
