POSITION OPENING ANNOUNCEMENT

TITLE: Employee Infection Control Nurse

SALARY RANGE: $1,884 - $2,712/mo
(NOTE: new employees typically start at or near entry level)

PERSONNEL CLASSIFICATION: Public Health Nurse II

HOURS/WEEK: 20

OFFICE: 3482 Broadway, Boulder

DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
This position is an integral part of the Immunization Program. The infection control nurse conducts a variety of complex tasks associated with safeguarding Boulder County Public Health (BCPH) staff from communicable diseases. Primary responsibilities will be to develop, implement, and oversee infection control practices, including employee immunizations, for staff and volunteers working in public health programs. This position will also provide support to the agency’s immunization clinics on Mondays and Wednesdays, as needed. As a member of the Communicable Disease Division, this position will provide support to other programs, such as Communicable Disease Control, Emergency Preparedness, HIV/STI Outreach, and TB Control. This position is expected to flex work hours (i.e., adjust routine hours and work additional hours during outbreak investigations and when responding to public health emergencies) to accommodate program needs, and it may require travel throughout Boulder County.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversees the regular review and update of BCPH’s Infection Control Manual.
  • Assesses the immunization status and job requirements for all new BCPH staff and ensures appropriate vaccinations are provided prior to or on their first day of work.
  • Tracks immunization status for existing staff, as needed, using a computer tracking system.
  • Conducts infection control classes and proficiency testing on a regular basis for BCPH staff.
  • Keeps current on medical/legal regulations regarding infection control, immunizations, and communicable disease control.
  • Provides immunizations to the public during immunization clinics.
  • Assists with surveillance and communicable disease control activities.
  • Participates as a member of the EPI (Epidemiology) Team during outbreak investigations.
  • Provides clinical support services for the TB Control, Immunization, and HIV/STI Outreach programs, as needed.
  • Provides superior customer service to all clients, medical providers, internal staff, and the public.
  • Provides educational sessions to the public, medical providers, and agency staff regarding issues related to infection control, immunizations, and communicable diseases.
  • Maintains secure and confidential files.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Graduation from a college or university accredited by the National League of Nursing with a bachelors of science degree in nursing (BSN).

Experience: Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of recent professional experience in nursing.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of epidemiologic principles related to surveillance, investigation, and control of communicable diseases.
  • Knowledge of the epidemiology of and control measures for routinely reported communicable disease (i.e. childhood diseases, hepatitis, bacterial meningitis).
  • Knowledge of current and acceptable nursing practices, including the ordering, tracking, and administration of vaccines, as well as venipuncture, specimen collection, immunizations, and tuberculin skin tests.
  • Computer literacy relevant to the agency’s existing system. Must be able to function at a high level using word processing, e-mail, and database entry and retrieval.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills.
  • Strong interviewing and counseling skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to establish priorities.
  • Ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances, especially during outbreak investigations.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Must be culturally sensitive and willing to work with a varied, diverse population.

Special Requirements:

  • Must have access to transportation readily available for use during working hours.
  • Current license to practice as a registered nurse in Colorado.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours.

IMMIGRATION REFORM AND CONTROL ACT: All new employees and rehires will be required to provide documentary proof of their eligibility for employment.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: As an employee of Boulder County Public Health, you may be required to assist in response activities for disasters and emergencies (including acts of bioterrorism), which may occur outside of normal working hours. You may also be required to attend Incident Command Training (ICS) appropriate for your position.
