Colorado Youth Rally in Denver to Tell Big Tobacco to "Butt Out!"

DENVER – Dozens of Colorado youth who are part of the statewide Get R!EAL (Resist! Expose Advertising Lies) movement, will gather in downtown Denver on Sunday, October 5, to tell the tobacco industry to “Butt Out! Stop targeting Colorado kids!” during a rally and news conference.

The event begins at 1:15 p.m. with a march that will start at the intersection of Glenarm Place and the 16th Street Mall. The march then will proceed along the 16th Street Mall, past Union Station and over the Millennium Bridge. The march will end at the Denver Skatepark located at the corner of Little Raven and 19th Streets. Marchers will gather on the northeast corner of the Skatepark where a news conference will be held at 2 p.m.

The event is the culmination of over 20 smaller “Butt Out!” events staged in communities throughout the state on Saturday, September 27. During those local events, hundreds of Get R!EAL youth picked up thousands of cigarette butts as a symbolic gesture to community members, but more importantly, to the tobacco industry. The butts now are being brought to Denver to be poured into body bags during the Oct. 5 news conference. The butts-filled body bags then will be sent to tobacco companies with the “Butt Out!” message.

The news conference also will feature several youth speakers and other demonstrations.
