One West Nile Virus Death Reported
DENVER – State health officials Thursday reported that a woman from Thornton is the latest victim of West Nile virus, bringing the state’s death total to 43.The Adams County woman, who was suffering from meningitis, died September 8. This is the fourth West Nile virus-related death for Adams County.
Also reported were 26 new human cases of West Nile virus in Colorado, bringing the total to 2,134.
Other totals for confirmed cases of West Nile virus reported in Colorado this year include 703 birds; 591 horses; 135 blood samples taken from chickens in the 23 sentinel chicken flocks maintained by the state and local health departments at locations across Colorado; and 624 mosquito pools.
State health officials Wednesday announced the end of West Nile virus season in the state, informing Coloradans that they no longer have to use bug repellant as mosquitoes have stopped taking blood meals and have switched to nectar meals to prepare for winter.
