No West Nile Virus Deaths Reported

DENVER – State health officials Friday reported 37 new human cases of West Nile virus in Colorado, bringing the total to 2,171.The number includes the 43 deaths reported as of Thursday, Oct. 2. There were no new deaths to be reported on Friday although additional deaths are expected to be reported before the end of the season.

Other totals for confirmed cases of West Nile virus reported in Colorado this year include 703 birds; 591 horses; 135 blood samples taken from chickens in the 23 sentinel chicken flocks maintained by the state and local health departments at locations across Colorado; and 624 mosquito pools.

State health officials Wednesday announced the end of West Nile virus season in the state, informing Coloradans that they no longer have to use bug repellant as mosquitoes have stopped taking blood meals and have switched to nectar meals to prepare for winter.
More information on West Nile virus can be found on the Web at www.FighttheBiteColorado.com or by calling the Colorado Health Education Line for the Public at 1-877-462-2911. The statewide, toll-free hotline, which is staffed by trained operators, is open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week.
