Three Additional Human Deaths from West Nile Virus
Reported
DENVER–Three additional Coloradans have died from West Nile virus,
bringing the state’s death total to 50, state health officials
announced Thursday.
The deaths included:
· A 45-year-old man from the City and County of Denver, who was
suffering from meningitis. He died on September 19. This is the
eighth West Nile virus-related death for Denver County.
· A 76-year-old man from Logan County, who was suffering from
encephalitis. He died on November 1. This is the second West Nile
virus-related death for Logan County.
· A 68-year-old man from Larimer County, who was suffering from
encephalitis. He died on October 28. This is the seventh West Nile
virus-related death for Larimer County.
Also reported were 48 new human cases of West Nile virus, bringing
the state’s total to 2,591 for 2003.
State health officials said that the new human cases are for
individuals who were infected with West Nile virus in late-August
through the end of September. Although West Nile virus season is
over in Colorado, such residual cases will continue to be reported
through November as the department’s investigations are completed.
