Three Additional Human Deaths from West Nile Virus Reported

DENVER–Three additional Coloradans have died from West Nile virus, bringing the state’s death total to 50, state health officials announced Thursday.
The deaths included:
· A 45-year-old man from the City and County of Denver, who was suffering from meningitis. He died on September 19. This is the eighth West Nile virus-related death for Denver County.
· A 76-year-old man from Logan County, who was suffering from encephalitis. He died on November 1. This is the second West Nile virus-related death for Logan County.
· A 68-year-old man from Larimer County, who was suffering from encephalitis. He died on October 28. This is the seventh West Nile virus-related death for Larimer County.

Also reported were 48 new human cases of West Nile virus, bringing the state’s total to 2,591 for 2003.
State health officials said that the new human cases are for individuals who were infected with West Nile virus in late-August through the end of September. Although West Nile virus season is over in Colorado, such residual cases will continue to be reported through November as the department’s investigations are completed.
More information on West Nile virus can be found on the Web at www.FighttheBiteColorado.com or by calling the Colorado Health Education Line for the Public at 1-877-462-2911. The statewide, toll-free hotline, which is staffed by trained operators, is open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week.
