JACOB AND EMILY MOST POPULAR BABY NAMES IN COLORADO IN 2003

DENVER – In 2003, for the eighth consecutive year, Jacob remained the favorite name for boys born in Colorado while the name Emily moved back into the number one spot for girls, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment announced Tuesday.
The names were among those chosen for the almost 70,000 babies born in the state last year.

A list compiled by the Department of Public Health and Environment’s Health Statistics Section of the 50 most popular baby names for 2003 revealed that some of the names most often chosen in Colorado have changed, but some of the names have remained popular for several years.

Emily has been the favorite name for girls in five of the past eight years and was the name given to 377 girls in 2003. Emma was next with 354 girls given that name. It was followed by Madison, which was the favorite girl’s name in Colorado in 2002, but this year dropped to third place when it was chosen for 296 baby girls. In fourth and fifth place for 2003 were the names Hannah, which was chosen for 288 baby girls, and Isabella, which was chosen for 270 girls. Other names in the top 10 were Ashley, Abigail, Samantha, Elizabeth, and Grace.

Jacob and Joshua were the first and second most commonly used names for boys for the second year, having been used 473 and 402 times, respectively. Andrew was in third place at 384, followed by Alexander, 346; and Daniel, 344. The rest of the top 10 included Ethan, Michael, Joseph, Matthew, and Ryan.

Favorite baby names for Colorado’s Hispanic parents in 2003 were again Jennifer and Jose. Since 1997, Jose and Luis have been the two most popular names for Hispanic boys, except in 2002, when Jesus was the second most popular name for boys. Ashley was the second most popular name for Hispanic girls in 2003.

As in 2002, the most popular name for baby girls born to Colorado’s African-American parents last year was Nevaeh, or heaven spelled backwards. The most popular name for African-American boys was Elijah, which also was the favorite in this category in 2002. Imani and Jordan were tied for second place for newborn African-American girls, while Isaiah and Jaden were tied for the second most popular name for African-American boys.

Less common names chosen for babies born in Colorado in 2003 included Lexus, Jetta, and Mercedes for girls and Chandler, Ross, and Joey for boys.

Compared with the 2002 list, girls’ names Ava, Avery, Brooke, Leslie, Lily and Trinity were new to the top 50. There were fewer new additions for boys with Evan, Hunter, and Robert joining the list of top 50 names for male newborns.

The list of the 50 most popular baby names among all races and the list of the 20 most popular baby names for White non-Hispanics, White Hispanics and African-Americans accompany this release.
