Health Professionals and Public Invited to Statewide Conference to Reduce Cancer in Colorado

DENVER—State health officials Friday invited individuals concerned with reducing cancer rates in Colorado to attend the fourth annual Colorado Cancer Conference to be held on Monday, Aug. 9, and Tuesday, Aug. 10, at the Denver Marriott Southeast, 6363 E. Hampden Avenue, in Denver.

The conference will begin on Monday, Aug. 9, at 8 a.m. and conclude on Tuesday, Aug.10, at 4:30 p.m. Interested persons may register at the door. The registration fee for both days of the conference is $115.

With this year’s theme, “From Research to Practice,” participants will be encouraged to work more collaboratively to bring science-based, recommended practices to the state’s daily fight in the war on cancer. The conference goals include expanding skill sets or participants and building statewide capacity to decrease cancer incidence and deaths while enhancing the quality of life for survivors. This year’s conference will provide over 40 learning sessions on emerging research, current trends and evidence-based best practices.

Heather Tolby, acting director of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s Comprehensive Cancer Program, said, “In order to more effectively fight cancer, gaps and overlaps in services need to be identified and addressed. With 6,372 cancer deaths in Colorado in 2002, cancer remains the second leading cause of death in the state. There also were approximately 16,920 malignant cancers diagnosed in Colorado in 2002.”

Tolby continued, “While cancer incidence statewide has decreased in the past decade, as have the number of cancer deaths, Colorado must continue its collaborative approach to cancer control to continue this downward trend. Coordinated efforts to ensure collaborative planning and cross-discipline learning are what make comprehensive cancer control so effective in the State of Colorado.”
Highlights of the 2004 Colorado Cancer Conference agenda will include:

  • Thirty-six breakout and skill-building sessions on emerging research, current trends, and evidence-based best practices on quality of life and supportive care; prevention and intervention strategies; science and information; health disparities, and tobacco control.
  • Colorado Cancer Coalition Leadership Award Presentations
  • Colorado Cancer Plan 2005: Yearly Progress Report
  • Colorado Central Cancer Registry Award Presentations
  • Cancer Control Exhibit Expo
  • Career Development and Student Mentorship Track
  • Healthy Cooking Demonstrations
