Unveiling of Stream Health Signs, Mascots Set for
September 29
The first of more than a dozen signs promoting stream health and water
quality awareness will be unveiled during a special ceremony at noon Sept.
29 at the Left Hand Valley Grange Park, located at the corner of Niwot
Road and Sawtooth Lane in Niwot.
Several municipal, county and regional officials will be on hand to
inaugurate the outreach effort, along with H2O Jo and Flo, Colorado's new
water quality mascots. Free stickers, magnets and information materials
will also be available.
The signs which will be installed at selected locations throughout the
region where creeks intersect or run next to local streets ? are intended
to increase public awareness of local water resources with the message
"Keep it clean, 'cause we're all downstream!"
In Colorado, storm drains lead straight to creeks. Pollutants from
day-to-day activities such as walking a pet, fertilizing your lawn or
changing the oil in your car can be washed into storm drains during rain
storms, snowmelt or lawn watering.
The new creek signs are intended to remind residents and businesses
that they can have a direct impact on water quality and it is up to all of
us to protect local creeks.
The signs were supplied by the Watershed Approach to Stream Health
(WASH) project public education and outreach program. WASH is a
partnership of communities in the Boulder and St. Vrain creek watersheds
working together to protect our water quality. WASH partners include
Boulder County and parts of Weld County in addition to the cities of
Boulder, Longmont, Louisville and the towns of Erie and Superior.
