RANDY KUYKENDALL NAMED TO HEAD
STATE EMS PROGRAM
DENVER – Randy Kuykendall, the former emergency medical
services operations manager and training coordinator for the New Mexico
Public Health Division, has been selected to serve as the new chief of the
Emergency Medical Services section at the Colorado Department of Public
Health and Environment.
Douglas H. Benevento, the department’s executive director,
said that Kuykendall was selected for the position in the department’s
Health Facilities and Emergency Management Services Division because of his
extensive experience in the field, which began as a firefighter and
paramedic in New Mexico.
“We are extremely pleased to have Randy join our team and
are excited about the skills he brings to the job,” said Benevento.
“I’m very excited to have the opportunity to be of service to the Trauma
and Emergency Medical Services community of Colorado,” Kuykendall said. “I
hope to facilitate the development of an improved climate of communication
and trust that will result in the highest patient care for Colorado’s
residents and visitors.”
With Kuykendall expected to begin work in early November,
Benevento said he will be an excellent addition to the section as it
continues to work to solve recent problems in its certification program.
Gail Finley-Rarey, the current Emergency Medical Services
section chief, has assumed a position as section chief for the division’s
Acute and Primary Care Programs, the Community Based Services Programs and
the Occurrences Program. She will be responsible for hospitals; ambulatory
surgical centers; community clinics; and home health and home and
community-based services programs among others.
Kuykendall currently is the Critical Care Education
Department chair at Pueblo Community College where he has oversight and
supervision responsibility for the Emergency Medical Services and
Respiratory Therapist programs.
Kuykendall was selected following a comprehensive interview
and selection process. Applicants submitted written position statements to
the department; made formal presentations to the Colorado State Emergency
Medical and Trauma Services Advisory Council; and interviewed with key
staff, managers and directors at the department.
