National Latino AIDS Awareness Day
Free Rapid HIV Testing Offered
Boulder County Public Health (BCPH) and Boulder County AIDS Project (BCAP)
announce that October 15, 2005, will become an annual observance as National
Latino AIDS Awareness Day. It is a day of hope and for the future of a world
without AIDS.
BCPH and BCAP are collaborating to organize a community event that will
bring public awareness to the surging new infections among Latinos/as in
Colorado, as well as to promote prevention activities and testing. BCPH and BCAP
will provide 4 bi-lingual testers to conduct free and anonymous HIV antibody
testing utilizing OraQuick ADVANCE testing technology. Anyone that attends
the event can receive a test, even if they are not a member of the Latino
community.
In addition, BCPH and BCAP are asking community providers to join in this effort so that the event
brings awareness to the many barriers to HIV/AIDS prevention – domestic
violence, sexual assault, mental illness, substance abuse, homelessness, and
sexual orientation just to name a few. Resource tables will be set up for
community providers to market their services and to accept referrals on-site.
Entertainment, food, and incentives for testing will be provided to all
event participants. Incentives include a $10 gift card to Wal-Mart for the
first 25 people to be tested and NLAAD rubber bracelets.
