Water Commission Plans Hearing on
Eagle River Water Standards

Contact: Paul Frohardt, Administrator
Colorado Water Quality Control Commission
(303) 692-3468

DENVER - The Colorado Water Quality Control Commission has scheduled a public, rule making hearing at 9 a.m. on Monday, December 12, to consider revisions to the water quality standards for segments of the Eagle River near Minturn.

The hearing will be held in the Sabin Room at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, 4300 Cherry Creek Drive South, in Denver.

The revisions are proposed jointly by the Department of Public Health and Environment’s Hazardous Materials and Waste Management Division and the Denver Regional Office of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Alternative revised standards have been proposed by Viacom International, Inc.
The proposed revisions are a result of a study of the water quality improvements resulting from a Superfund clean up of the Eagle Mine, drainage from which impacted the quality of the Eagle River. Viacom is the former owner of the Eagle Mine and played an active role in the cleanup, which was overseen by the Hazardous Materials and Waste Management Division.

This hearing was originally scheduled for February 2005 but was postponed to provide time for additional monitoring and analysis of aquatic life in the Eagle River.

The following parties have expressed an intent to formally participate in this hearing: Vail Associates, Inc.; Eagle Park Reservoir Company; the Eagle River Water and Sanitation District; the Colorado Division of Wildlife; the City of Colorado Springs; the Northwest Colorado Council of Governments; Eagle River Watershed Council; the Town of Minturn; and Kamlet Shepherd and Reichert, a Denver law firm.

Copies of the proposal are available on the commission’s Web site or from the Commission Office at 303-692-3469.

Interested persons are encouraged to submit written comments to the commission at or prior to the hearing, or to provide oral comments at the hearing.
Any written comments should be submitted to Paul Frohardt, Administrator, Colorado Water Quality Commission, 4300 Cherry Creek Drive South, Denver, CO 80246. Frohardt also can be reached at (303) 692-3468.
