Ban on Open Burning Permits - Effective Noon Friday,
June 2nd
June 2006, BOULDER — Sheriff Joe Pelle, acting in concert with Larimer
County Sheriff Jim Alderden, will impose a fire ban for the mountainous
western half of Boulder County, effective at noon, Friday, June 2nd.
Sheriff Alderden will impose a similar ban in Larimer County at the same
time. The Board of County Commissioners is expected to ratify Sheriff
Pelle’s decision at their next meeting on Thursday, June 8th.
Sheriff Pelle, citing the fact that precipitation is well below normal
levels and that weather predictions for the near future call for
temperatures in the 90’s and gusty winds, said that, “The time is right
for the imposition of a fire ban. It’s not something that I take
lightly, but we are currently on the ‘edge’ of a very high fire danger
rating and will likely cross over this weekend or sometime next week, so
it seems only prudent to do so as a preventative measure.”
Open burning is prohibited in the area covered by the ban. Open burning
includes any campfire, warming fire, charcoal grill fire, and the
agricultural or prescribed burning of ditches, fencerows, fields, brush,
trash, and debris. The order excludes fires contained within
liquid-fueled or gas-fueled stoves, fireplaces within buildings,
charcoal fires at private residences, and fires built within permanent
fire pits or fire grates located on developed picnic sites or
campgrounds.
Citizens are also asked to be particularly cautious about smoking
cigarettes in the ban area. While not proscribed by the ban, carelessly
discarded cigarettes are a notorious cause of wildfires.
The ban will remain in effect until conditions warrant its being lifted.
The Sheriff’s Office will make notification to the public if and when
the ban is rescinded.
