State Health Officials Urge Coloradans To Discard Some
Future Foods, Salads of the Sea Dips
August 17, 2006, DENVER - The Colorado Department
of Public Health and Environment Thursday urged individuals
who may have purchased from Safeway Stores “Salads of the
Sea” Smoked Salmon Flavored Spread and Krab Spinach and
Artichoke Dip, manufactured by Future Food Ltd., to check
their containers for either a use-by date of 8/23/06 or lot
code 06186. These dips, sold in 7-oz. containers, may be
contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that
can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in
individuals with weakened immune systems, such as young
children, frail and elderly people.
Patti Klocker, assistant director for the Department of
Public Health and Environment’s Consumer Protection
Division, said, “It is extremely important that any consumer
who purchased these Salads of the Sea dips check the
packages for the lot code and distribution date code. No
illnesses have been reported to date.
“Consumers who have this variety of Future Food Salad of
the Sea product should discard the product or return it to
the place of purchase for a refund.”
Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms of
Listeria monocytogenes, such as high fever, severe headache,
stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Klocker
said.
The products affected by the recall include the
following:
- 7-oz. containers of “Salads of the Sea” Smoked
Salmon Flavored Spread
- 7-oz. Containers of Krab Spinach and Artichoke Dip
Both products would have a lot code of 06186 and a use-by
date of 8/23/06.
The product was distributed by Future Food Ltd. of Dallas to
Safeway stores in Colorado. This expanded recall was issued
on Aug. 15, 2006.
Klocker said, to date, there have not been any reports of
illnesses linked to the product in Colorado or nationwide.
The potential for contamination was noted after routine
testing by the company revealed that a package of Krab Dip
Supreme, which was initially recalled on Aug. 11, 2006,
contained Listeria monocytogenes. Future Food had no
evidence that the products in the expanded recall were
produced by the same manufacturer, on the same day, and on
the same equipment as the products recalled on Aug. 11.
Future Food is expanding its recall as a precaution. The
U.S. Food and Drug Administration is working cooperatively
with federal and state regulatory agencies.
