State Lab Confirms Spinach Sample is Same Strain as National Outbreak

September 28, 2006, DENVER – The Laboratory Services Division of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has linked a spinach sample with the outbreak strain of E. coli O157:H7. The sample spinach was from the same bag as spinach eaten by the individual who has been confirmed as Colorado’s lone spinach-related E.coli case.

DNA fingerprinting tests at the state lab determined that the strain from the spinach matches the strain from patients in the nationwide outbreak. The package of spinach that tested positive was “Dole Spinach” and had a “use by” date of Aug. 30, 2006. The tainted brands of spinach have been recalled by manufacturers and removed from store shelves.
