State Lab Confirms Spinach Sample is Same Strain as
National Outbreak
September 28, 2006, DENVER – The
Laboratory Services Division of the Colorado Department of
Public Health and Environment has linked a spinach sample
with the outbreak strain of E. coli O157:H7. The sample
spinach was from the same bag as spinach eaten by the
individual who has been confirmed as Colorado’s lone
spinach-related E.coli case.
DNA fingerprinting tests at the
state lab determined that the strain from the spinach
matches the strain from patients in the nationwide outbreak.
The package of spinach that tested positive was “Dole
Spinach” and had a “use by” date of Aug. 30, 2006. The
tainted brands of spinach have been recalled by
manufacturers and removed from store shelves. For more
