Water Quality Control Commission to Consider Revised Ammonia
Standards
February 23, 2007 - DENVER - The Colorado Water
Quality Control Commission has scheduled a public
rule-making hearing at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 13, to
consider revised ammonia standards for multiple water
segments in the Arkansas, Rio Grande, Colorado, North
Platte, South Platte, Laramie, Republican and Smoky Hill
river basins.
The meeting will be held in the Sabin Room at the Colorado
Department of Public Health and Environment, 4300 Cherry
Creek Drive South, Denver. The meeting is open to the
public.
Elevated levels of ammonia in streams can adversely impact
aquatic life. Ammonia standards affect the level of
wastewater treatment required for municipal wastewater
treatment plants. In general, the proposed revisions would
result in less stringent ammonia standards for high
elevation, cold-water streams, and more stringent ammonia
standards for warm water plains streams.
Copies of the proposals, a notice explaining the rule-making
procedures and other written documents related this hearing
are available on the commission's Web site at
http://www.cdphe.state.co.us/op/wqcc/WQClassandStandards/Ammonia/0703Ammonia.pdf
or from the Water Quality Control Commission office at 303-692-3469.
Interested people are encouraged to submit written comments
to the commission at or prior to the hearing, or to provide
oral comments at the hearing.
Any written comments should be submitted to Paul Frohardt,
administrator, Colorado Water Quality Commission, 4300
Cherry Creek Drive South, Denver 80246. Comments received by
Wednesday, Feb. 28, will be distributed to commission
members for review prior to the hearing. Frohardt also can
be reached at 303-692-3468. |
