E.coli O157:H7 is a very serious bacterium that can cause
bloody diarrhea and dehydration. The very young, seniors and
persons with compromised immune systems are the most
susceptible to foodborne illness.
To date, two cases of E.coli O157:H7 have been reported
in Colorado, one of which is linked to the recalled product.
Both adults became ill in early May and have fully
recovered.
The possible contamination of the product was discovered
through sampling done by the California Department of Health
Services and the Colorado Department of Public Health and
Environment's Laboratory, in coordination with the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention, in the course of an
investigation into reported illnesses. The ground beef
products were produced on April 20, 2007 and were shipped to
retail distribution centers in Arizona, California,
Colorado, Oregon and Utah.
