$236,000 in Grants Awarded for Sexual Assault Prevention
Programs
June 15, 2007, DENVER – Nine grants totaling
$236,000 have been awarded for 2007-2008 to new and
established programs for the prevention of sexual violence
in Colorado. The Colorado Department of Public Health and
Environment’s Sexual Assault Prevention Program administers
the grant program with funds from the federal Rape
Prevention Education Program. The grants are renewable for
up to two additional years. The awards are intended to
support the comprehensive primary prevention of sexual
violence across the state.
The programs include child sexual abuse prevention
projects that focus on educating adult caregivers, sexual
violence prevention and building healthy relationships for
middle and high school youth, as well as community-based
projects designed to promote social change.

Aurora, Asian Pacific Development Center, $20,000

Project Title – Voices of Asian Youth United Against
Sexual Violence
This grant will build sexual violence prevention capacity
among Asian-American Pacific Islander youth and community
leaders in the Denver metropolitan area. Through extensive
community involvement, the project will focus on
comprehensive program planning and development to identify
culturally relevant primary prevention strategies
specifically for Asian-American Pacific Islander youth.
Counties served are Adams, Boulder and Jefferson.
Boulder, Blue Sky Bridge, $25,000

Project Title – Child Sexual Abuse Prevention
This grant will fund the primary prevention of child
sexual abuse by providing training to adult caregivers of
young children, including parents, educators, daycare
providers and caseworkers. The project will focus on
building community involvement in prevention efforts, as
well as the planning and development of child sexual abuse
prevention programs specifically for Latino communities. The
project will serve Boulder County.
Denver, Denver Children’s Advocacy Center, $25,000

Project Title – Denver Safe from the Start
This grant will fund the prevention of child sexual abuse
through training educators, parents and young children in
several Denver-area Head Start centers. The project will
include an assessment of sexual violence prevention needs
and a train-the-trainer component, which will build
community expertise in the prevention of child sexual abuse.
The project will serve Denver County.
Durango, Our Sister’s Keeper Coalition, $25,000

Project Title – All Our Relations Prevention Project
This grant will fund the comprehensive planning and
development of culturally specific sexual violence
prevention strategies for the Southern Ute Indian Tribe.
Drawing from the culture and traditions of the Southern Ute
Tribe, the project will focus on building the capacity for
effective prevention on the reservation, assessing needs and
developing appropriate services. The project will serve La
Plata County.
Denver, Rape Assistance and Awareness Program, $30,000

Project Title – Abuse Prevention Training Program
This grant will fund the prevention of child sexual abuse
by providing training to adult caregivers of preschool,
elementary- and middle-school children. The project will
focus on building community involvement in the prevention of
sexual violence and developing culturally relevant
prevention programs for Latino communities. Counties served
are Adams, Arapahoe, Denver and Jefferson.
Durango, Sexual Assault Services Organization, $27,500

Project Title – Primary Prevention of Sexual Violence in
Rural Southwest Colorado
This grant will fund the development of multilevel
strategies for the primary prevention of sexual violence
among rural youth. The project will focus on comprehensive
program planning and development, with a specific emphasis
on bystander intervention, teen mobilization and challenging
oppression. The project will serve La Plata County.

Project Title – Northeast Colorado Sexual Assault
Prevention Project
This grant will fund the prevention of child sexual abuse
by working with parents, educators, foster parents,
caseworkers and community members on the northeastern
plains. The project will include an assessment of sexual
violence prevention needs in the communities served and
expanding prevention services for the Latino community.
Counties served are Logan, Morgan, Sedgwick, Washington and
Weld.
Denver, Sisters of Color United for Education, $30,000

Project Title – HipHopOsium
This grant will fund sexual violence prevention programs
for urban youth. The project aims to influence intolerant
and gender-biased attitudes and beliefs exhibited in
mainstream HipHop culture toward a more respectful form of
interpersonal communication. The involvement of urban youth
in all aspects of comprehensive program planning,
implementation and evaluation is a primary focus. Counties
served are Adams, Boulder and Denver.
Alamosa, Tu Casa, Inc., $25,000

Project Title – Sexual Assault Prevention Project
This grant will fund a comprehensive planning process to
develop primary prevention strategies for a large, isolated,
rural region. This will include social marketing to increase
awareness of sexual violence and to disseminate prevention
messages throughout the region, as well as increasing
community involvement in sexual violence prevention efforts.
The project will serve Alamosa County.
The 2005 Colorado Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance
System indicated that about 14 percent (1 in 7) of Colorado
women and 2 percent (1 in 50) of Colorado men had
experienced a “completed” sexual assault at some point in
their lifetime. This is equivalent to an estimated 212,900
women and 25,400 men in Colorado.
