Lakeside Foods Inc., Recalls Canned French Style Green Beans

August 2, 2007—DENVER— Lakeside Foods Inc. of Manitowoc, Wis., has voluntarily recalled 14.5-ounce cans of French Style Green Beans canned under the labels of Albertsons, Happy Harvest, Best Choice, Food Club, Bogopa, Valu Time, Hill Country Fare, HEB, Laura Lynn, Kroger, No Name, North Pride, Shop ’n Save, Shoppers Valu, Cub Foods, Dierbergs, Flavorite, IGA, Best Choice and Thrifty Maid due to the potential of contamination with harmful organisms including Clostridium botulinum, which causes botulism.

The French Style Green Beans were distributed to Colorado and will have in the top line of the can code EAA5247, EAA5257, EAA267, EAA5277, EAB5247, EAB5257, ECA 5207, ECA5217, ECA5227, ECA5297, ECB5207, ECB5217, ECB5227 and ECB5307.

Patricia Klocker of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment advises Colorado consumers who may have this product to return it unopened to the place of purchase. If consumers have any foods made with these products, throw them away immediately.

Lakeside Foods indicates some of the cans may have been under-processed and some cans could have leaked. While no illnesses have been reported, products in these cans may be contaminated. No Clostridium botulinum toxin has been found in any cans tested to date; however the company continues to take precautions and continues to test the product.

Symptoms of botulism poisoning can begin from six hours to two weeks after eating food that contains the toxin. Symptoms may include double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth and muscle weakness that moves progressively down the body, affecting the shoulders first, then descending to the upper arms, lower arms, thighs, calves, etc. Botulism poisoning also can cause paralysis of the breathing muscles, which can result in death unless assistance with breathing (mechanical ventilation) is provided. Botulism can be fatal.

Individuals who show these symptoms and who may have recently eaten French Style Green Beans from one of the labeled brands and can codes should seek immediate medical attention.

Lakeside Foods recommends that consumers with questions or concerns about this recall contact the company’s consumer hotline at 1-800-446-3834, extension 4090.

For more information, the public can call Patricia Klocker with the Consumer Protection Division at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment at 303-692-3620.
