Two Products Recalled Due to Salmonella
and Undeclared Milk
April 7, 2008—Denver—State health officials Monday
announced two national food
recalls, one involving Malt-O-Meal Unsweetened Puffed Rice
and
Unsweetened Puffed Wheat cereals due to potential
contamination with
Salmonella, and the other involving Harry and David
Chocolate-Covered
Select Blend Espresso Beans containing milk as an undeclared
ingredient. The recalled cereals have “best if used by”
dates ranging from
April 8, 2008 to March 18, 2009 and were distributed at
Albertsons and
King Sooper stores in Colorado. The cereals are marketed
under the
Malt-O-Meal brand and under the following private label
brands:
- Acme
- America’s Choice
- Food Club
- Giant
- Hannaford
- Jewel
- Laura Lynn
- Pathmark
- Shaw’s
- Shoprite
- Tops
- Weis Quality
The recalled espresso beans
come in 8-oz. clear plastic bags and have
“best if used by” dates after August 28, 2005. They would
have
been sold prior to April 5, 2008. Products containing soy
milk are not
subject to the recall. Anyone who consumes the beans and
is allergic to milk can experience a
serious or life-threatening allergic reaction.
Six Harry and David stores located in Colorado may have
carried the
recalled espresso beans. Store locations include
- Arapahoe Crossing Shopping Center, Aurora
- Flat Irons,
Broomfield
- Prime Outlets, Castle Rock
- Colorado
Mills, Lakewood
- Prime Outlets, Loveland
- Prime Outlets, Silverthorne
Salmonella is a foodborne
illness which may cause fever, bloody
diarrhea and abdominal cramps. Anyone who ate the recalled
cereal and is
experiencing symptoms should contact a health care provider.
No illnesses associated with the recalled products have been
reported. Individuals who purchased either of the products
may return them to the
place of purchase for a refund. Consumers with additional
