Johnson Printing Receives 2008 PACE Pioneer
Award
November 13, 2008 - BOULDER - Johnson
Printing has been selected by Partners for A Clean
Environment (PACE) as the 2008 winner of the Pioneer Award,
given to the company that exemplifies outstanding
performance and leadership in implementing business
practices that promote environmental sustainability.
JP plant manager Mike Olson stated, "We're honored to be
recognized as a PACE Pioneer. Running our business in an
environmentally responsible manner has been a JP priority
for decades, and we continually look for ways to further
reduce waste, consumption, and emissions." JP
has become one of the few Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
certified printers in Colorado. FSC is a non-profit
organization devoted to encouraging the responsible
management of the world's forests. FSC sets high standards
that ensure forestry is practiced in an environmentally
responsible, socially beneficial, and economically viable
manner. Along with FSC certification, JP
continues to make operational changes to continually improve
their environmental practices. Some examples include using
programmable thermostats, charging forklifts during off-peak
hours, using vegetable-based inks, using low VOC (Volatile
Organic Compounds) fountain solutions, monitoring water
usage with a remote auto meter reading system, watering
lawns in the early morning, and using low-flow devices. The
list continues to grow, and as a leader in the commercial
printing industry, JP recognizes the importance of planning
and achieving sustainability objectives. JP
also has an extensive recycling program and has
significantly reduced hazardous waste generation. Much
effort goes into stopping and thinking before making buying
and discard decisions. JP's recently formed "Green Team"
meets monthly to discuss additional ways to recycle and
opportunities to improve operations and the environment. JP
currently recycles paper, plates, cans, plastic, shrinkwrap,
blankets, glass, toner, ink cartridges, pallets, and
computers. As a result, JP has almost cut their trash bills
in half, reducing collections from eight hauls each week to
five. "Johnson Printing is showing that
reducing energy use and air emissions makes good business
sense," said Bill Hayes, Boulder County PACE Team Leader. "I
sincerely hope that businesses throughout Boulder County
will take note of Johnson Printing's efforts and follow
their example." Johnson Printing became
PACE-certified earlier this year by successfully completing
a set of industry-specific criteria aimed at improving
energy efficiency and water conservation, while reducing
waste, pollution, and costs. PACE provides
businesses with free educational outreach and technical
assistance and recognizes their environmental achievements.
Business sectors involved in PACE include auto body, auto
repair, printers, dental offices, manufacturers,
restaurants, and landscape professionals. PACE is a
partnership of the City of Boulder, Boulder County Public
Health, City of Longmont, Town of Superior, Town of Erie,
City of Louisville, and the Boulder Chamber of Commerce.
