Position Title:INTERN Child Care Emergency Planning Intern

Program Summary:
Major Objective
Child care facilities have a responsibility to keep children safe in emergencies. This may involve safe evacuation of young children, which poses significant challenges under difficult conditions. A pre-determined, well-rehearsed plan is critical. Unfortunately, day-to-day operational demands and limited resources have left many facilities unprepared. This internship will assist child care facilities in bringing emergency and evacuation plans up-to-date and map out a route for implementation of a training and exercise plan.

  • Conduct an environmental scan to identify facilities that would benefit most from assistance.
  • Secure the participation of at least 10 child care facilities in developing and implementing emergency preparedness plans.
  • Identify key partners (e.g. county personnel, school districts, etc.) to support child care facilities in this planning.
  • Create simple templates for emergency plans developed from new and existing resources.
  • Compile a list of resources that might be useful, including associated contact information.
  • Develop a training session for child care providers on creating emergency plans.
  • Coordinate with the emergency preparedness and Child Health Promotion Program coordinators.
  • Design and conduct an evaluation of these efforts.
Qualifications and Requirements:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret and integrate information gathered from multiple sources.
  • A basic understanding of the National Recovery Framework and emergency planning.
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) training to at least the ICS 100 & IS 700 level is preferred.
Special Requirements
  • Must submit immunization history form and immunization documentation.  Immunizations and/or TB tests are required (at the expense of BCPH), and volunteer/intern must comply with these requirements prior to start date.

Training Dates and Information:
Training and Orientation
  • Training and background briefing on child care facilities’ emergency planning.
  • Universal precautions and TB training will be provided by the BCPH employee infection control nurse before the volunteer/intern can begin.
  • Volunteers will be required to view BCPH new employee videos online or on DVD.
Additional Information:
Position will be jointly supervised by the Boulder County Public Health Emergency Preparedness Program coordinator and Child Health Promotion Program coordinator.

  • Opportunity to participate in emergency preparedness trainings offered during the internship period; may include ICS, WebEOC, EMTrack.
  • Opportunity to observe EP coalition meetings like the Multi-Agency Coordinating Group (MACS) and the Health and Medical Response (HAMR) Partnership.
  • Opportunity to attend other public health training sessions, as available.
