Position Title:INTERN: Research Intern for the Consumer Protection Program

Program Summary:
The BCPH Consumer Protection Program is seeking one intern over the summer to conduct research related to active managerial control (AMC) practices in retail food facilities.  Boulder County is currently conducting AMC inspections to assess the degree of AMC practices currently being utilized in local facilities.  The AMC inspection incorporates questions related to elements of an effective food safety management program, as described by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).  It is our hope to be able to correlate AMC inspection scores with how facilities perform on regulatory inspections.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct AMC evaluations at retail food establishments:
    • Make appointments with and visit retail food establishment managers to evaluate their food safety practices.
    • Collect and enter data into BCPH database.
  • Analyze collected data to determine correlation of AMC scores with regulatory inspection scores.
  • Provide education and resources to retail food establishment managers.
  • Collect information related to barriers that may prohibit managers from implementing AMC practices.
Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to conduct self in a responsible and professional manner.
  • General computer and word processing skills.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, as well as independently.
  • Self-directed and motivated.
  • Some experience or background in public health and food safety is highly desired.
  • Knowledge of behavior change models is desired.
  • Experience in providing outreach and education is desired.
  • Experience in monitoring and evaluation desired.

Special Requirements 
Must submit immunization history form and immunization documentation.  Some immunizations and/or TB tests may be required (at the expense of BCPH), and volunteer/intern must comply with these requirements prior to start date.

Training Dates and Information:
  • Universal precautions and TB training will be provided by the BCPH employee infection control nurse before the volunteer/intern can begin.
  • Volunteers will be required to view BCPH new employee videos online or on DVD.
