Position Title:Volunteer Medicare Counselor
Department:Community Services
Category:Human Services and Public Health
Time Commitment or Project Date:2-4 hours weekly year-round, on weekdays between 8am and 5pm. Hours may increase during the annual Medicare open enrollment period from Oct. 15-Dec. 7. Must be at least 21 to apply.
Primarily in Boulder and Longmont at county offices.  During open enrollment, travel to Louisville or Lafayette Senior Centers may also be expected.
Program Summary:
The Medicare Counseling Program provides education, counseling, problem-solving, and advocacy to older adults and people with disabilities to help them understand Medicare Health Insurance and make informed choices about health care.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Respond to callers, who are either Medicare enrollees or their caregivers; to provide requested information regarding Medicare Insurance; and to assist with the enrollment process and problem solving.  Face-to-face meetings with clients may also be necessary, especially during the annual Medicare open enrollment period.
Qualifications and Requirements:
Ability to understand and organize complex information; ability to communicate health insurance information to consumers; desire to work with older adults and people with disabilities; great customer service attitude; computer and internet navigation skills.  Bi-lingual English-Spanish stills are a plus, but not required.  Must be at least 21 to apply.

Training Dates and Information:
3-day training is offered at various times annually.  The next scheduled trainings in 2014 are: Day 1, July 23 in Denver; Days 2 & 3, August 28-29 in Denver.  Ongoing attendance at 5-6 update training sessions annually of 2-3 hours each is required.
Additional Information:
Our volunteers provide a much needed service to help older adults understand the complex Medicare programs.  Consumers are very appreciative of the services they receive, so our volunteers report high "job" satisfaction!
