The American Lung Association releases report on Lung Cancer

compilation of research examining lung cancer among African Americans and the need to eliminate this and other health disparities. The report, which includes a preface by William J. Hicks, M.D., provides important information on the possible biological, environmental, political and cultural factors that make African Americans more likely to get lung cancer and more likely to die from it.

EPA to Strengthen Smog Standards

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proposing to strengthen the smog standard. Smog, also known as ground-level ozone, can aggravate asthma and even increase the risk of premature death in people with heart or lung disease. Continued

Air Quality 'Action Days'

"Red" and "blue" air quality advisories will soon be a thing of the past.  The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment will now forecast air quality "Action Days."  When either pollutant conditions and/or visibility are expected to exceed standards, the department will call for an "Action Day," just as it does during the summer for ground-level ozone. During the wintertime season, Action Days will activate mandatory residential burning restrictions that limit burning to approved devices only. Action Days also encourage voluntary action to limit driving. Impaired visibility will be the reason for most Action Days during the wintertime season.  Continued

EPA has published a list of energy-saving tips for the home and office to reduce energy bills, air pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions this summer. State, local, and tribal governments can implement these tips in their buildings and share them with residents and businesses. Continued
