Burn Permits

Open Burning Permit

Burn permits are required for open burning of slash in Boulder County. (See Colorado Air Quality Control Commission Regulation No. 9). Permits may be denied if a practical alternative method of disposal exists. (See alternatives to burning)

Please allow up to 3 business days for processing of burn permit applications.

Types of Burn Permits

For all Burns, You Must Contact

  • Your local fire department on the day of the burn 
  • Boulder County Sheriff's dispatch center at 303-441-4444 on the day of the burn; before starting the burn.

Outdoor fires are not permitted on days that the National Weather Services has declared "red flag" fire danger days.

Materials that May Be Burned

  • Branches or slash less than 3 inches in diameter
  • See Winter Burning page for special exceptions

Materials that May NOT Be Burned

  • Trash or garbage
  • Buildings or construction debris
  • Grass, weeds, pinecones, or leaves
  • Stumps or tree trunks

Permits Will NOT Be Issued For

  • Burning within any city limits
  • Paul Nor Subdivision
  • Longmont Fire Department within the city of Longmont
  • Louisville Fire Protection District
  • Coal Creek Fire Protection District (CCCFPD) unless a permit is first obtained from CCCFPD, and there is at least four (4) inches of snow on the ground.
  • Timberline Fire Protection District (TFPD) unless a permit is first obtained from TFPD and there is at least four (4”) inches of snow on the ground. Please call 303-582-5768  or go to Timberline Fire for more information. 
  • Fourmile Fire Protection District unless there is at least four (4”) inches of snow on the ground. Please call Fourmile FPD at 303-444-0882 for more information.

Burn Permits Are NOT Required For
