Martindale Granary

Dating from the 1940s, the Martindale Granary was once part of Earl and Pearl Martindale’s farming operation on the eastern plains of Boulder County. The unaltered wood frame building measures 14’ wide by 148’ long, and is the longest known granary to exist in the County. Unchanged from its original design, the wood frame structure demonstrates how advancements in technology aided the farming process and how functionality dictated design. Harvested grain would be unloaded into a large hopper in the granary building and transported by a vertical elevator to the gleaner for additional cleaning. The grain would then pass through several levels of shaker tables and fans, then moved by elevator to a suspended track under the gabled roof. Doors under the track allowed the farmer to direct the grain into one of the 5 storage bins. When the grain was ready to be used, an auger was setup outside one of the removal doors that run along the bottom of the north side of the building to extract the grain into a truck for transport. Boulder County purchased the land in 1998 and now leases the land out to continue the property’s farming tradition.
