Rock Creek Farm Cultural Landscape
Located within the Rock Creek basin, Rock Creek Farm is a unique
rural historic landscape, comprised of natural and cultural resources.
Part of the South Platte River drainage, the Rock Creek basin extends
from Colorado Highway 93 south of Boulder, across Rocky Flats and open
rangeland, to a point just east of Lafayette where it merges within Coal
Creek. The riparian ecosystem formed by the creek creates a biological
environment rich with native plants and wildlife. Combining with the
natural environment are several historically significant cultural
resources within Rock Creek Farm's present 1150 acres. These include two
recorded archaeological sites, the site of the Rock Creek Station on the
Overland Trail, the site of the Sunnyside Coal Mine, Stearns Dairy Farm
#2 (earlier known as the Goodhue Farm), the Burlington Northern
Railroad, the Goodhue Irrigation Ditch, and Stearns Lake (originally
known as Goodhue Reservoir #1). In addition, dinosaur bones dating from
the late Cretaceous Period have been found on the property. |
