Tommy Jones Stage Stop

Originally lured to Colorado in 1859 by the discovery of gold in the foothills above Boulder, Thomas J. Jones, first filed for a 160-acre homestead along the South Boulder Creek before heading to Gold Run seeking fortune. By the following year Jones returned disappointed and began construction on the stagecoach stop. Over the years, the log cabin provided weary travelers a safe place to stay on the line between Longmont, Burlington, Valmont and Boulder. In 1865, the stagecoach stop became the first post office in Valmont with Jones its first postmaster. The Jones family continued to operate the stop until 1876 when they sold the property and moved to Larimer County. As stagecoach travel became obsolete, the building transformed into a boarding house. Originally a small cabin, the building experienced many changes over its history to accommodate the changing needs of its owners. The Tommy Jones Stage Stop is the oldest standing building in Boulder County today and awaits restoration.
