Wildfire Mitigation

Boulder County Fire Management

Boulder County is active in the implementation of various techniques to reintroduce fire into our native ecosystems while providing for public safety. Prescribed burns are conducted on a regular basis in the spring and fall of each year. Burns are regularly conducted at Rabbit Mountain for weed control (mainly cheat grass), and restoration.

A prescribed burn in the fall of 1998 was credited in part with helping contain the Walker Ranch/Eldorado Canyon fire in 2000.
Boulder County Fire Management is an interdisciplinary approach involving resources from within and without Boulder County. Prescribed burns are done by the Boulder County Parks and Open Space forestry and fire staff, weed district, agricultural resource staff, wildlife staff, the Wildfire Mitigation Coordinator, and members of the Fire Protection District where the burn is taking place.
