Beth Haynes Award Ceremony Set for Oct. 21

The Boulder County Law Enforcement Domestic Violence Task Force will host the eleventh annual Beth Haynes Memorial Award ceremony on Thursday, October 21, 2004. The event will begin at 2 p.m. in the auditorium of the main branch of the Boulder Public Library, 1000 Canyon Blvd., Boulder.*

This award honors the memory of Boulder Police Department Officer Beth Haynes, who was slain in April 1994 while responding to a domestic violence call.

This award is unique within the county because officers and detectives can be nominated by their peers or any other agency staff with whom they collaborate on a regular basis. The recipient is chosen by a team representing almost every law enforcement agency in the county, as well as Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence, SafeShelter of St. Vrain Valley, the District Attorney's office, Boulder County's Department of Social Services, and the County's Domestic Abuse Prevention Project (DAPP).

The Task Force received 19 nominations for this year's award, the largest group of nominations received since the award was created. This year's recipient is Detective Carolyn Roberts of the Boulder County Sheriff's Office. Det. Roberts was nominated by Sgt. Heidi Prentup and Sgt. Rick Brough, both with the Sheriff's Office.

Det. Roberts' award reflects her outstanding work on behalf of both adult and child victims of domestic violence as well as her training expertise on these issues.

Special recognition awards also will be given to Boulder County Probation Officer Ted Bradshaw for his work with the Domestic Violence Enhanced Treatment Program, and to Sgt. F. "Bill" Palmer of the Lafayette Police Department. Sgt. Palmer's award reflects his exceptional work that set a court precedent recognizing the seriousness of strangulation in domestic violence cases.
Zonta International, a worldwide service organization of professionals working to advance the status of women, also sponsors the award. The organization places special emphasis on the prevention and eradication of violence against women and children. Zonta is pleased to provide the reception following the ceremony as well as donating a partial scholarship that will allow Detective Roberts to attend the National College of District Attorneys' 2005 annual conference on domestic violence.

We invite media representatives and the public to attend the event. For more information, please contact Susan Ransbottom, Boulder County's Domestic Abuse Prevention Project at 303-441-4725.

For more information on the local chapter of Zonta, please contact Dr. Ellen Tye at 303-443-8366.

*Due to restricted parking, we suggest parking at the east end of the Justice Center parking lot (6th and Canyon) and walking to the library.
