New program offers rebates for energy-saving insulation and air sealing
(Boulder, Colo.) - Residents throughout Boulder County can now apply for rebates for energy-saving insulation and air sealing projects completed on homes on or after April 30, 2008. Funding for the rebates, which will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis, is contributed by the Governor’s Energy Office (GEO) in partnership with Boulder County, the city of Boulder, Longmont, Louisville, Lafayette, Nederland, Jamestown and Superior.
Details:
- The GEO Insulate and Seal program will be administered locally through the Center for ReSource Conservation (CRC).
- Rebates cover insulation (in attics and/or exterior walls) and air sealing.
- The rebates cover 20% of the cost of the insulation and air sealing, up to a maximum of $300.
- Rebates are first-come, first-served, until 2008 program funding is available (funding is expected to continue in 2009).
- Rebates are only for installations begun on or after April 30, 2008.
- The rebates are available to residents in: unincorporated Boulder County, the city of Boulder, Longmont, Louisville, Lafayette, Nederland, Jamestown and Superior.
- To qualify for the rebate, applicants must have completed a Residential Energy Audit through the REAP program (or, in the city of Boulder only, a Home Performance with ENERGY STAR assessment).
- Residents must select an insulation contractor that has attended GEO's insulation and air sealing seminar. A list of qualified contractors is available at www.conservationcenter.org.
- Apply by visiting the CRC Web site at www.conservationcenter.org or by calling 303-441-3278 x24.
Properly insulating homes and sealing sources of heat transfer (such as leaky windows and doors) are simple ways to increase the energy efficiency of homes by reducing the need to heat and cool. Residential Energy Audits help identify ways that homeowners and renters can improve the energy efficiency of their homes, from updating energy-hog appliances and identifying “phantom” loads that drain energy to implementing insulation and sealing improvements. Residential Energy Audits are one of the early action strategies recommended by the Boulder County Consortium of Cities Sustainable Energy Plan, which has been adopted by governments representing 97 percent of Boulder County’s population. The plan recommends key actions to significantly reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions countywide. To view the entire Sustainable Energy Plan, visit www.bouldercounty.org/sustain.
