RE:
High Water Advisory and Creek Closures Still in Effect

The high water advisory and closures of Boulder Creek and the North and South St. Vrain Creeks will remain in effect this weekend.  The weather prediction for this weekend calls for cooler temperatures with upslope flow and widespread rain over the foothills and plains in Boulder County.  With the creeks already flowing at higher than normal levels and the anticipated rainstorms, Sheriff Joe Pelle has concluded that, in the interest of public safety, the closures will remain in effect.

The Sheriff is authorized to close the creek under Colorado Revised Statute (CRS) 33-13-111.  The closure includes watercraft such as rafts, belly boats, and inner tubes from floating in the creek.  There is a specific exemption for kayaks and white water canoes, which are permitted; nonetheless, kayakers are strongly encouraged to observe caution.  Violations of the closure are a class 2 petty offense and could result in a $50.00 fine.

Recent warm weather is promoting the melting of the snow pack, adding significantly to the amount of water flowing in the creeks.  This morning, Boulder Creek was flowing at 618 cubic feet per second (CFS) and normally flows at between 100-300 CFS.  The St. Vrain Creek that runs through the town of Lyons was flowing at 1160 CFS and normally flows at 400-600 CFS.

Recreationists are being urged to use caution along the creeks and be aware of creek banks that may become unstable due to the high water.
