Boulder County accepting proposals for 2010 research on county open space lands
Boulder County Parks & Open Space is currently accepting research proposals for 2010 funding. Two categories will be awarded: grants up to $5,000 and grants up to $10,000. Through these research projects and inventories the department can monitor management practices and improve resources and park visitor experiences.
Department staff have identified 15 priority topics even though any open space related research will be accepted. Those topics include:
-
Carbon sequestration estimates for existing and potential Boulder County land management actions on grasslands, forests and agricultural lands.
-
Colorado, regional and national study of public planning processes for open space programs.
-
Comparison of wildlife occurrence and abundance on restored prairie versus native prairie, with research emphasis on the Boulder County species of concern list.
-
Connections between volunteer experiences and land stewardship.
-
Economic and carbon reduction benefits of wood disposal with an air curtain burner.
-
Evaluation of the effect of mastication as a forestry management tool on forest understory and wildlife.
-
Evaluation of integrated noxious weed management techniques.
-
Evaluation of restoration techniques for former agricultural lands, with emphasis on diversity of plants restored.
-
Investigation of nesting success of burrowing owls in Boulder County versus other areas in Colorado, and as appropriate, incorporate colony burrow density as an aspect.
-
Mountain pine beetle infestation in thinned and un-thinned ponderosa pine stands.
-
Nighttime recreation effects on wildlife.
-
Occurrence of white pine blister rust and mortality of limber pine in Boulder County.
-
Small mammal sampling pre and post riparian restoration.
-
Surveys on the following wildlife species on Boulder County open space lands, emphasizing the lower montane: Abert’s squirrels, small owls.
-
Wildlife species comparisons between thinned and unthinned ponderosa pine or lodgepole pine forests.
The deadline for proposals is Thursday, January 28, 2010 by 4:30pm. Visit the research web page at http://www.bouldercounty.org/openspace/resources/res_funding/res_fund.htm for proposal guidelines.
