Cashing in the Chips: The
Boulder County Parks and Open Space Biomass Heating Project
Boulder County Parks
and Open Space has adopted a biomass energy system to heat the the Parks
and Open Space and Transportation complex in Longmont. The biomass
energy system uses wood byproducts, or wood chips, from our natural
resource management activities on Open Space properties.
This video
demonstrates how waste wood from forest thinning operations can be used
to generate power. This technology is not complex and many other
municipalities, school districts and counties are also interested in
using this technology, which can be used to heat a wide variety of
buildings. This video
was produced by the Colorado Governor’s Office of Energy Management and
Conservation.

Mention open space and most people envision trails and wildlife. Who
would guess that Boulder County farmers grow enough barley to brew a
quantity of beer to satisfy the entire county? Or that the largest horse
ranching operation in the nation is housed right here in Boulder County?
The video reveals these and many other fascinating glimpses of the
active farming component of the County open space program. The 16-minute
program was produced by the City of Boulder's Channel 8 in 2003.

Parks And Open Space
Honor the past to understand the present and illuminate the future.
Evidence of human presence in Boulder County dates back twelve thousand
years, and Boulder County has heritage of prehistoric and historic
places and artifacts. This program highlights the Boulder County Parks
and Open Space Department's efforts to preserve and educate the citizens
of the county about local history. Boulder County is working to
safeguard prehistoric tribal campsites, mines and mills from the boom
days, some of our first farms and ranches, and many culturally
significant landscapes. You will learn about the Indian artifacts found
at Carolyn Holmberg Preserve at Rock Creek Farm and the legacy of the gold, silver and tungsten boom.
You will get a snapshot into life on a farm in "Little Italy" and will
learn about some of Boulder County's pioneering families. The 21 minute
program was produced by the City of Boulder's Channel 8 in 2005.
