Betasso Preserve is located
approximately five miles west of Boulder, off Sugarloaf
Road.
A controlled burn is contingent on ideal
weather conditions, including relative humidity, fuel
moisture and wind.
Firefighters will first ignite
strips around the perimeter of the area to create a
firebreak line (also known as black lining) and then the
interior will be burned in a systematic manner.
The prescribed burn area is approximately 44 acres near the
parking lot area. Due to the location of the controlled burn
and safety concerns, no visitors will be permitted on the
property during the one-day prescribed burn. However, the
open space will reopen to park users afterwards.
Firefighters will monitor the burned area to ensure the fire
is completely out.
The primary objective of this resource management project is
to maintain a healthy ecosystem at Betasso Preserve. The
controlled prescribed burn will enhance wildlife habitat and
reduce non-native vegetation, primarily cheatgrass and
smooth brome, at the site. Since a prescribed burn is a
controlled burn, it will also help reduce hazardous wildfire
fuels.
During the course of the prescribed burn there may be heavy
smoke in the air. Visibility in the area may be impaired for
short periods of time. If your home is in the area, you may
want to leave your windows closed during the prescribed burn
and leave your pets indoors.
The Boulder County Sheriff’s Department and other wildland
fire task force agencies will assist the Boulder County
Parks and Open Space Department with the prescribed burn.
