Fishing on Open Space
Whether you are interested in
reservoir or stream
fishing,
Boulder County Open Space has something to offer every angler. There
are also sites for seniors, kids,
and the handicapped.
A Senior's
Fish-off is held the first Friday in May every year. Summer Catfish
Nights at Fairgrounds Lake is an annual summer program. Refer to the fishing
guide for details about fishing on open space.
No ice fishing is allowed at any Boulder County Open Space pond.

Walden Ponds Wildlife Habitat

Walden Ponds features
several ponds reclaimed from
gravel pits. The ponds have been stocked with largemouth and smallmouth bass, channel
catfish, and bluegill. With the exception of Wally Toevs Pond, all ponds
are catch and release, artificial flies and lures only.
Wally Toevs Pond is restricted to
seniors and/or handicapped individuals and requires a state fishing license.
Wally Toevs Pond is stocked with rainbow trout during the spring
and fall months.

Lagerman Reservoir
|
|
This 116-acre reservoir is located 2.5 miles
southwest of Longmont. Lagerman
Reservoir has been stocked with largemouth
bass, walleye, black crappie, bluegill, tiger muskie, and channel catfish. Bass
possessed must be 15 inches or longer. Tiger muskie must be 36
inches or longer.
Bank and boat fishing are permitted. Only non-motorized vessels
and boats
with electric or gasoline motors of 7.5 horsepower of less are permitted on
the water. Vessels are restricted to wake-less speeds (less than 5
mph.) Sailboats and sailboards are not allowed. There is
a seasonal closure (April 1st through July 31) on the western end of the
reservoir for nesting birds.

Fairgrounds Lake
|
|
This 16-acre pond is located at the Fairgrounds
Park in Longmont. Fairgrounds
Lake is stocked with largemouth bass,
bluegill and channel catfish. Fishing is by artificial flies and
lures only, catch and release. These regulations are relaxed for
Summer Catfish Nights where night fishing with bait is allowed.
Dates for Catfish Nights vary to coincide with the moon cycle
and are held one Wednesday each summer month -- June, July, and
August.
Cattail Pond is
expressly for children under 16 (who don't need a license). It is across the street from Fairgrounds Lake, behind the
arena and is a wonderful place to introduce young people to
fishing.

Pella Crossing
|
|
There are three reservoirs at Pella
Crossing:
the large Heron and Sunset Lakes, where bellyboating is allowed;
and the smaller Webster Pond. They have been stocked with
largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, yellow perch, and channel catfish.
Boating is not
permitted on Webster Pond to protect its value as waterfowl
habitat. |

Stearns Lake at Rock Creek Farm
|
|
This 23-acre reservoir is located on Rock Creek
Farm at 104th and Dillon Roads, south of Louisville. Stearns
Lake is part of
a historic irrigation system. The reservoir is stocked with
largemouth and smallmouth bass, tiger muskie and channel catfish.
Boating is not permitted. There is a small
permanent closure to protect the wetlands along the western shore.

South Boulder Creek at Walker Ranch
|
|
South Boulder Creek flows for 2.5 miles through
the rugged, forested slopes of Walker Ranch. The creek is
periodically stocked with rainbow trout. Both bait and fly fishing
are permitted.
Anglers can gain access to this area by hiking
the South Boulder Creek Trail approximately one mile.

The first
Friday in May each year, Boulder County Parks and Open Space
hosts the annual Seniors' Fish-Off event. Prizes are awarded for the largest
and smallest trout caught, most experienced angler, best fishing hat and
best fishing joke.
This year's Fishing Derby is Friday, May 9, 2008 from 6:00 am to 10:00
am at Walden Ponds Wildlife Habitat. All senior citizens (64 years and
older) are welcome to join the derby at Wally Toevs Pond.
Participants must have a valid Colorado fishing license. Bring your
own fishing gear and a folding chair. Artificial and live bait are permitted. A wheelchair-accessible fishing
pier is available. No reservations are required, but all anglers must
sign in. Fishing may not begin before 6:00 a.m.
Following the contest, Parks and Open Space will sponsor a fish fry
brunch and present prizes and awards.
