Coal Creek Trail
Coal Creek Trail in eastern Boulder County, stretches, uninterrupted
for seven miles along Coal Creek from 96th Street in Louisville to 120th
Street in Lafayette. The 10-foot wide trail is primarily soft-surface,
with only a few sections of concrete in low spots.
Popular among hikers, joggers and stroller-pushing parents, the trail
is a quiet place to enjoy nature. The creek sounds, dense shrubs and
canopy of cottonwood trees are a treasure for all. As development occurs
in surrounding fields, the quiet area along the trail becomes a very
valuable resource for plants, animals and people.
Depending on the weather, you can hike, cross-country ski or snowshoe
along the trail in winter. Don't forget to bring a pair of binoculars and
a tracking guide book or bird guide book. You will likely see clues to
what types of wildlife depend on the Coal Creek ecosystem. While on the
trail, look for birds resting on large cottonwood limbs, horses grazing
adjacent fields, or maybe tracks or coyotes chasing mallards into the
creek, evidence of predator pursing prey.
Coal Creek trail is multiuse. There is a picnic shelter
available for visitors.
Coal Creek Trail can be accessed from near the town of
Louisville.
Coal Creek Trail is 7 miles long. Rock Creek Trail which will go along
Rock Creek is only partially finished. Both trails are open to hikers, mountain
bikers and equestrians.
Dogs
are also allowed on these trails.
A small group shelter, which can
accommodate up to 20 people, is available for use on a first-come,
first-serve basis.
The trail can be accessed from many points in the Louisville and
Lafayette area. However, if you are driving to the trail, park at the
Aquarius Trailhead parking lot on Highway 42, just west of the Louisville
cemetery.
